Solana Has Unveiled A Web3 Mobile Phone



Solana has announced the Solana Saga which is a new mobile phone which is built around Web3 and is meant to help secure and simplify mobile cryptocurrency trading.

This phone will have Solana Mobile Stack (SMS). This will be used on top of android to allow for apps to be created based on the Solana blockchain. 

Solana Mobile Stack will also have The Mobile Wallet Adapter which is a protocol to connect mobile Solana wallets. 

This phone will also have Seed vault for keeping secret data secure such as seed phrases and private keys. 

When it comes to specs, the Saga has a 6.67" OLED display, 12 GB RAM, 512 GB storage and a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. 

It is expected to cost $1000 and you can currently reverse one with a fully-refundable deposit of $100. Pre-orders are already open and the phone is expected to ship in early 2023. However, I do wonder if it will end up costing $1000 or if it turns out they will have to charge more and if they will end up delaying it.

Overall, I think it is interesting that Solana has decided to make their own mobile ecosystem and go up against Apple and Google. I am not sure they will be successful given no one has succeeded at breaking the Apple and Google mobile monopoly before (and many have tried).

  Microsoft is working on Outlook Lite which will be a new lightweight version of Outlook.  Microsoft said Outlook Lite will be, "An Android app that brings the main benefits of Outlook in a smaller app size with fast performance for low-end devices on any network."  This comes after Thunderbird announced their mobile client last month, so there does appear to be a lot of development in the email client space right now. This is interesting since the email client space hasn't really had much attention since the advent of social media and mobile instant messaging.  However, I do feel Email is quite a good standard and is much better than today's walled garden instant messaging and social media platforms. Although, I must give credit to lots of fediverse projects (such as Mastodon and Pleroma) for trying to break down those walled gardens (as well as Delta Chat which is a Email app which acts like a instant messaging app).

Sprint Has Been Officially Retired

  So the US mobile network Sprint has officially been retired after being acquired by T-Mobile in 2020. After Sprint was acquired, it was very clear T-Mobile sought to phase out the Sprint brand. However, it has taken until two days ago (June 30th, 2022) to actually officially retire the brand, and shut down the Sprint 4G LTE network.  If you are a Sprint customer, you will have probably noticed your mobile service has been disconnected. T-Mobile has stated that they gave Sprint customers the option of a free 5G replacement device.  Anyway, there are no more Sprint services in operation after this shutdown.
